Finding a Way Forward
In 2024, Diane’s daughter Emily died at age 9 from Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. The experience of caring for Emily for more than two years and then witnessing her death was incredibly traumatic for Diane, her husband, and their son.
Since Emily’s death, Diane has worked to process her grief and honor Emily’s memory, all while caring for her son. This summer, she felt ready to take a bold step: explore her grief with a guided psilocybin and ketamine journey.
The Science of Healing: How It Works
Guided psychedelic experiences can help patients, especially those who have dealt with significant trauma, to open new pathways for healing. According to “The emergence of psychedelics as medicine,” published by the American Psychological Association, these substances can promote the brain’s ability to change, adapt, and reorganize itself—a vital process for those navigating the complexities of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Low doses of ketamine, in particular, can promote the synaptic changes necessary for neurons to communicate more effectively, laying the groundwork for emotional breakthroughs.
The Journey Inward
First, Diane set her intention: She really wanted to see her daughter.
Next, the drugs were administered by a guide.
Finally, Diane fell into a deep sleep. She faded in and out of consciousness for about 8 hours. Her guide remained present throughout the entire session—playing music, monitoring her progress and her vitals, and documenting Diane’s reflections.
Here are the highlights of Diane’s journey, in her own words:
I was no longer in a body. I was simply in a state of consciousness.
Time no longer existed in a linear way.
I didn’t see my daughter, but I felt her presence and I understood that I don’t have to worry about Emily. She’s okay.
I had an overwhelming peaceful sense of knowing that Emily and I are already together. Our bond remains unbroken.
Signs from Nature: The Fox
Diane and her guide noticed fox tracks on the property where they were staying. After Diane’s treatment began, a wild fox approached the guide, barked at her, and then fell asleep nearby. At the same time, Diane had a vivid dream involving a fox. Because Emily loved foxes, she took this as a sign that the physical and spiritual worlds had coalesced.
Finding Peace
Since the treatment, Diane no longer feels the friction and anxiety she’s felt since Emily’s death. These feelings have been replaced by a genuine sense of gratitude for the years she shared with Emily. Her guide believes that she’s opened new pathways to healing.
“I have a lighter energy,” she explains.

This is a wonderful account and thanks for writing about it. I have experienced, seen firsthand, and believe that psychedelics and guided low dose ketamine in particular can be an incredibly beneficial treatment for traumatic grief and PTSD. 🤍 Afterall, the grief is about severed connection, and finding an ongoing connection is paramount. Finding and sharing ways to feel this bond once it goes beyond the physical is so beneficial ✨
Love this. I’m glad she was able to do this, feel her daughter and know that their bond remained unbroken.
